CSTFA About the Centre

About the Centre

Tropical regions are grappling with unprecedented challenges due to population growth and increased demand for high-quality seafood. This expansion strains wild fisheries and pushes for greater efficiency in aquaculture.

The CSTFA addresses both aquatic systems and the industries and communities they support.

Our multidisciplinary approach enables researchers to tackle significant problems more effectively than individual efforts alone.

Our Vision: To be a global leader in tropical fisheries and aquaculture research, delivering innovative solutions for sustainable food security and ecosystem health.

Our Mission: To be a hub for world-class multi-disciplinary research and collaboration, training future leaders, and engaging with industry and communities to promote hands-on and sustainable practices in tropical fisheries and aquaculture.

Dr Cyrus's research focus is largely on new species development (particularly low tropic species), and the incorporation of macroalgae to improve many aspects of aquaculture production including larval settlement, feed development, and the recycling …

Priority Research Objectives

CSTFA Priority Research Objectives

CSTFA's Priority Research Objectives are often multidisciplinary in nature and are closely aligned with our four main Themes:

  • Improved management of aquaculture for resilient and sustainable productivity
  • Closing the lifecycle of the most heavily fished ornamental species
  • An advanced reproductive and genetic toolbox to manage and maintain natural and domestic populations
  • Diversification and enhancement of economic productivity in tropical aquaculture
  • Support for the long-term sustainability, security, and environmental performance of commercial fisheries
  • Diversification and enhancement of economic productivity in tropical fisheries
  • Understanding the biological and ecological components and processes that sustain marine ecosystems and the fisheries they support
  • Enabling all consumers to have an increased choice of healthy seafood
  • Using advanced molecular approaches in the investigation of allergens and immunologic responses to seafood
  • Advancement of marine biotoxins analysis & biomarkers in aquaculture research & investigation of human health concerns from aquatic species
  • Improved management of pollutants including nutrients and plastics in the aquatic environment and in food supply chains
  • Tools to quantify ecosystem and biodiversity values for application in animal and plant management and conservation
  • Improve efficiency, sustainability and equity of current and emerging fisheries and aquaculture livelihoods and economic activities
  • Maximizing opportunities for individuals wishing to engage in, adopt and lead current and emerging economic development opportunities through targeted capacity building.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainable Development Goals

The CSTFA supports the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to food security, economic growth and wellbeing, and life on land and water and the equitable and sustainable expansion of the Blue Economy into tropical environments.
